Founded in Spring 2015, and officially recognized by the University of Iowa on May 12, 2015, the UI Trans Alliance serves as a base for activism regarding issues of transgender rights and policies at the University of Iowa and the community at large. The organization's goal is to spread awareness of transgender issues and work to increase public knowledge of the transgender population, while simultaneously developing and nurturing strong ties of community within the University of Iowa and surrounding areas. The UI Trans Alliance works to influence University of Iowa policies that relate to transgender students, faculty, and staff in order to promote a safer, more accepting campus atmosphere and living situation.
The transgender population, as defined by the UI Trans Alliance, consists of all those who do not solely associate with their gender assigned at birth and those who do not conform to the gender binary. This means that the Trans Alliance advocates for all who do not identify as cisgender, including those who identify within the gender binary (men and women) and those who do not.
The UI Trans Alliance has monthly events at which we have a variety of guest speakers, activities, and opportunities to socialize. Meetings are in the events section of this site or on our Facebook page. For up-to-date information on meeting topics and locations, you can sign up for our email updates! While this is the best way to stay in tune with what's going on, you can also like our Facebook page or join our Facebook group (or both!) if you'd like. Finally, if you have any questions about upcoming events, meetings, or about the organization generally, you can send us an email at UITransAlliance@gmail.com and we will get back to you within 48 hours!
The Trans Alliance also puts on events each semester. In the Fall is Trans Awareness Week, which is held at the end of November around the Transgender Day of Remembrance (11/20). This week contains a whole host of events with a focus on spreading awareness about trans identities and experiences.
In the Spring is Trans Day of Visibility, held annually on March 30th. Later on is Trans Week of Action, held in mid to late April. This week also contains many events for students, faculty, staff, and community members that center around ways for individuals to take action on issues of trans rights.
